Picture this a customer walks into a restaurant and gets seated. Their waiter walks to the table and asks if they would like to order. The meal comes out hot, fresh, and delicious. The customer leaves happy. What they didn’t know though was that their waiter messed up. He put in the order wrong, and by the time he realized what happed it was too late the order was already made. So the cooks had to go out of their way just to make sure the order was right, and was done quickly. The customer didn’t know this they thought everything was fine. That’s what usually happens in a restaurant the customers never see what goes on behind the scenes. That’s why I wanted to find out what’s on the inside. To get some insight I sat down with a few people from the crew of Max and Erma’s restaurant. I wanted to get a perspective from everyone in the restaurant. There are some many parts to a restaurant that I want to understand the ones we don’t see every day. I started my quest with people we see all of the time waiters. Even though we always see them smiling at us we don’t see what else they have to deal with. There are many pros and cons to being a server. Pros being that you can work less hours and still be able to make the same amount of money if the restaurant is busy (The Waitress Confessions). Cons being it takes a toll on your body (The Waitress Confessions). I sat down with a waitress named Rachel from Max and Erma’s to ask her a few questions about the job. To start off I asked her simple questions like how long has she work there and is she happy there. Rachel worked there for about a year and a half a lot longer than most, but she loves it there. These were the people that we don’t see but they make our experience at the restaurant great because they actually make the food. I didn’t know till I actually saw the back of the house at a restaurant, but it is severely small. I sat down with one of the cook’s names Derek and asked him the same questions as Rachel. Derek has been working at the restaurant for about three months and thought it has been good so far. When I asked him to tell me about a horrible situation that has happen to him while working there I didn’t think he could give me one too bad because he hasn’t been there that long. As soon as I asked the question his eyes lit up. Derek told me about the time about a month into working at the restaurant he had to help with a banquet. After plating about 75 pieces of fish he put them all on a cart to be taken away by a server. When the server took the cart to the elevator the pushed a little too hard and the whole cart of over $5,000 worth of food and plates went tumbling on the floor. “I’m pretty sure my heart stopped when it happened and I kind of wanted to cry.” Said Derek after he finished explaining that he had to make all of the food over again and clean up the mess. When it came to the last question Derek explained he wish someone told him about the heat in the kitchen because at times it can be unbearable if you don’t stay
