Vitiligo is a disease, that occurs when the pigment cells of the skin is destroyed. In certain areas the melanocytes are destroyed, so it creates white patches on the skin. Vitiligo can be focal or it can me on more than one area on the body. Vitiligo is not painful, although some people with vitiligo can have physiological and emotional problems with it. Experts do not know exactly what the cause of vitiligo is just yet, but some researches think that the body’s immune system mistakenly destroys and attacks certain cells of the body or autoimmune condition. It is also possible to get it if one or more genes in your family has it. Some experts say that vitiligo is when the melanocytes destroy themselves, but the cause still remains unknown. Winnie has struggled with vitiligo ever since she was in elementary school, she used to get bullied and picked on all the time because of her skin disease. It wasn’t until she got to the end of middle school and into high school, when people became more mature and evident as to what was wrong with her. Winnie mentions that at Aprils age (10) she had no confidence, and if only she had as much confidence as she does now, things would have been different. April Star, is her biggest fan and Winnie explained that she wish she had he confidence that April had when she was younger and she wishes that she could have been strong just like her.
