It is important to note that this paper will use the term “gaming addiction” for continuity; there are many labels given to gaming/internet-use addiction because of the heterogeneous nature of this disease, limited research, and lack-of recognition in the DSM-5. This paper will give provide an overview of gaming addiction (prevalence, symptoms, and current research) and the theoretical frameworks of two schools of therapy that can be used in the treatment of gaming addiction. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) which has been the most readily studied and used in the realm of gaming addiction, and Brief Strategic Family Therapy (BSFT) are two of many suggested therapies for gaming addiction. Along with a theoretical review of CBT and BSFT their strengths and challenges of each. According to Kimberly Young (2007) in her article Understanding Online Gaming Addiction “online gaming is an emotionally draining and time-consuming activity; to create more time for computer gaming addicts neglect sleep, diet, exercise, hobbies, and socializing” (p. 358). Young states that there are distinct warning signs of gaming addiction but due to the cultural norms of computer use the warning signs can be easily justified by the addict. Parents, educators, counselors and practitioners should be aware of the warning signs of this pervasive and novel addiction. Warning signs that Young encourages clinicians to look for include: “lying or hiding game use, defensiveness and anger, social withdrawal, anxiety and depression when experiencing removal from the game, the use of gaming as an “escape” and continued use despite consequences” (p.
