Essay On Veterinary Career

As a young Hispanic female, it is difficult to strive in STEM fields when other minorities aren’t acknowledged or the budget prevents one from pursuing an education. For example, in the veterinary medicine field, there is a low representation among Hispanics. In 2010, Texas had at least 2% of their veterinarians as Hispanic. Polls were taken to solve the lack of diversity, and were found that the lack of diversity was mainly because of expenses. The lack of representation of the Hispanic community in the veterinary field encourages me to pursue biology and chemistry in undergrad to bring awareness in the diversity in the veterinary fields. Sadly, today, the Association of American Veterinary Medical Colleges states that veterinary medicine remains as one of the least diverse professions in the United States. Because of her impacts globally, I would like to strive like her by pursuing a veterinary medicine field to awaken minorities and inspire others by sharing new ways to save animals and prevent abuse. For now, I will continue to pursue my dream to be a veterinarian by getting involved as an animal care intern at the Philadelphia Zoo and as a biology major at Gwynedd Mercy University by increasing the diversity in the STEM fields and making an impact on others. Now, I am deeply involved with internships and the E-STEM program at Gwynedd Mercy University and continuing to learn to better my education and further myself and dream.
