“The titles "veterinary technician'' and ''veterinary assistant" are often used interchangeably; however, there are distinct differences between the two.” (Veterinary Assistant Vs. Veterinary Tech) I want to know whether I want to go to school to be a vet tech or a vet assistant so I decided to research the job descriptions, the difference in educational requirements, and the schools that offer vet tech programs in in North Carolina.
The job descriptions for both jobs are different but do have some similarities. Vet assistants tend to be more in the front, the person who greets the owners and deals with all the paper work. Vet technicians are more in the back doing work under the Veterinaries supervision. (Vet Tech vs. Vet Assistant, what is the Difference?) The daily tasks for a vet assistant are pretty simple for example feeding the animals, cleaning their kennels and monitoring the health of the animals all under supervision of either a vet technician, veterinarian, scientist or veterinary technologist. While the difference is very basic for them people can go on to advance in the career which include a little more education if they wanted to. The vet assistant requires little to no education in college. To become a vet assistant most vets only want high school diploma or G.E.D. Even though you only need little education you can take program that are for these subjects: office support, disease management and (Vet Tech vs. Vet Assistant, what is the Difference?) A big thing is “After your initial registration as a Veterinary Technician in North Carolina you must renew your license every two years” (STEPS TO BECOME A VETERINARY TECHNICIAN IN NORTH CAROLINA) Becoming a vet technician requires you have to get a two-year degree which is accredited from the American Veterinary Medical
