If we do not educate our children in our history and the reasons to honor and respect our veterans, then who do we respect? It was the many battles that these heroes triumphed over that helped to shape the destiny of our nation today, that enabled us to have these schools and the freedom to open or close them as we choose. Is this how we intend to teach Americas future to pay tribute to service members and the freedoms that they fought for? I have taught school for the last 27 years, we have always had Martin Luther King Day day off. Veterans' Day was a school holiday until state testing became the priority now the first semester of school is too short and the district won't add a holiday(cite). On Martin Luther King Day there are no classes for students, schools are out as well for Columbus Day, celebrating a man who never stepped foot in America. I do not understand how either of these men are more deserving of this honor than millions of military veterans who have fought in the name of freedom ever since our forefathers envisioned a free and independent
