Good Decision Making Regarding Alcohol Use
Underage drinking has become one of the largest social issues among young people in America today. Even though a large amount of underage people participate in drinking, the problem is that they are not aware of how dangerous alcohol can actually be. The reality is that alcohol is often the cause of many problems among young adult's. Alcohol ruins many young peoples lives, and is now one of the most serious problems they face. Alcohol use can alter a teenager's health, put strains on important relationships with their family and friends, as well as put others in danger. Alcohol is involved in nearly one-half of all murders, accidental deaths, suicides, crimes, and fatal automobile accidents. Alcohol can cause a serious decline in a young adults performance in school, and is believed to drastically alter productivity and the quality of someone’s work. On a larger scale, economic cost issues occur due to underage drinking. According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), the market for addiction treatment is about $35 billion per year. These problems could be prevented if teens and young adults would be more responsible and think about the effects of their actions when making the decision to drink underage. Unfortunately, most teenagers tend to ignore the fact that underage drinking is a crime. They do not realize that it is against the law, and if they are caught they are charged with a first-degree misdemeanor and a $1000.00 fine. That in itself is a good reason to not drink underage. However, drinking and driving one large problem often linked with underage drinking. 25% of crashes amount young drivers are alcohol related. Alcohol softens parts of the brain that are paramount in making decisions. Drunk drivers are a huge danger and put themselves and everyone else on the road at risk.
