Unbroken is a novel written in 2010 about WWll by Hillenbrand focused around the American Olympic star Zamperini. The purpose of Unbroken is to inform in an engaging way the experience of an American soldiers at the time of WWll in the Pacific. The book also describe the POW camps and share Zamperini’s story. The purpose of Unbroken is to provide a story of one POW, Zamperini, during World War II. A value is that Hillenbrand is a published author who had written a previous novel on WWll. She also got most of her information from primary sources (friends and family of people who were engaged in the war, as well as Louie). Unbroken is that it is a memoir, so it has a personal and emotional details. Another value of the book is that there are numerous citations and footnotes at the bottom of the pages that ensure accuracy. A limitation of the book is that there is little way to fact check the small details in the story as well as accurately portray all the emotions and motives of the Japanese, especially the Bird who refused to be interviewed. He was able to survive being lost at sea, Japanese camps, dehumanization, and physical deprivations of food and other necessities. Also, when the war ended, Zamperini was able to, overtime, integrate back into society. In the beginning, his wild and rebellious character demonstrates his spirit and freedom that persisted throughout the novel. Zamperini is considered luck because was able to survive the war, over coming his PTSD, overcome alcoholism, and live out the rest of his life as he wanted.
