Tweak: The View of the World from an Addicts Eyes
An addict is defined by the Cambridge Dictionary as, “a person who cannot stop doing or using something, especially something harmful” (Addict, 2015). The book Tweak by author Nic Sheff speaks to a different worldview of addiction. We able to see a glimpse into the world of an addict through the stories he shares with us about his recovery. Through out the story you get a chance to live through Nic’s shoes and the hardships he faced with his addiction and will forever continue to face. There are two major instances that stuck out to me in the book which are, his relationship with Lauren and his work as a prostitute. He maintains his relationships and ties with Lauren so he has a place to live because he spends the money he gets on his addiction. He tells Lauren that he loves her and he want to be with her, however he doesn’t want to loose this life of luxury he has with Lauren. When he is with her he has a place to sleep, eat, and do drug. Most of all he gets to be with Lauren and use he to fill his void he has. When Laurens parents find out she has been using he fears that everything he has and worked toward maintaining is going to be lost. When she overdoses and wakes up the next day she thanks Nic for saving her life and that she is falling in love with. Nic says he loves her to however he says, “ It feels like I mean it, but you can never be sure.” His love isn’t for her but for the life he is living and the perks that he gets with being in “love” with her. Another way he feeds his addiction is through prostitution. When he is rehab he has a session with his therapist and the therapist bring up an important point in his prostitution behavior. Nic was never really comfortable with who he was. So he used his sexuality to control and influence other people. He used it to get money and be able to support his addiction. His flirty nature and androgynous look was his tactics to get people to have sex with him for money. You can see both in Intervention and Tweak that the addict does whatever they can in their power to manipulate the people around them for money or drugs in order to feed their addiction. They have a way with words and terror that make people fall into their trap (Sheff,
