Many people who are addicted to watching television give up important family, social, hobbies, and job activities. Author Robert Kubey describes T.V. addiction, like a substance addiction. Kubey says drug and television addiction is related because the person at first spends time using the substance and then trying to stop using the substance unsuccessfully. A person will then withdraw from their friends and family and finally showing signs of withdrawal symptoms (enter source here). This easily happens to someone suffering from T.V. addiction. Someone can become dependent on T.V. overtime because it becomes a distraction and an escape from reality (enter source here). People know they should stop watching television but for some reason they cannot seem to turn the television off. When a person presses the power button on the remote, it instantly relaxes them. The brain conditions oneself to associate watching television as relaxation and no tension. When the screen goes black, it’s the opposite. The viewer will feel stressed and unhappy. When a person is watching television the orienting response is dilation of blood vessels in the brain, slow heartbeat, and major muscle groups constrict (enter source here). When a T.V. is on many people physically cannot take their eyes off the television. This is because at a young age we are naturally attracted to the sounds and light on the T.V. screen (enter source here). Also heavy T.V. viewers are more stressed and unhappy than moderate to light viewers. Many addicts admit that watching television distracts them from unpleasant thoughts, fill time, and to cure boredom. Television addicts usually will not participate in community, social, and sports activities. A person who watches a higher amount of T.V. is more likely to become obese than a moderate viewer (enter source here). People who were addicted to watching T.V. had withdrawal symptoms. Families volunteered and paid to participate in a week of no television. The first three to four days were the worst. Families argued more and screamed at each other. Nothing made these families interested, it 's like television is actually part of their lifestyle and makes their living much better
