Tuition-free College: the Future of Secondary Education in America The 2016 Presidential election brought the topic of tuition-free college to the forefront of American Politics. The people of the United States are divided; some believed that secondary education is a privilege, while others believe it is a right. Some believe tuition-free college would be economically impossible, others believe it is economically necessary. Although many claim that tuition-free college would be unnecessary and costly, it is a necessity for the free world; it keeps the populace educated, grants individuals financial freedom, helps ease the burden of inequality and discrimination in America, and is already successful both at home and abroad. I. Throughout the history of the world we have seen a need for educating our citizens. During World War 2, the people of the world saw the importance of an educated population. The German government targeted the “Intellectual Elite” and forced them out of their country or worse. Many of these men, specifically scientists and engineers, had the capability of designing weapons of mass destruction for Germany but were never given the chance. Many believe that tuition free college is unnecessary and a waste of tax payer dollars. Yes, short term it would have some effects on the United States economy. It would temporarily raise taxes a meager amount and it would affect the private colleges in our nation. But we must not look at the short term consequences, because there are many payoffs in the long run (Kambiz). For instance, more businesses will be created because of the lack of debt holding down students, more jobs will be created by these businesses as well. Currently, more and more businesses are requiring workers to have degrees. 180,000 new jobs requiring degrees were created between 2008- 2010
