Transgender women have been the victims of over half of all anti- LGBTQIA+ homicides. As we were talking combined discrimination earlier, it is also important to note that not only were these homicides centered towards trans women, but also nearly three quarters of these murdered trans women were women of Color. It just goes to show another point towards transmisogyny that most cases of trans men are swept under the rug in the American Media whereas trans women are exoticized and placed front and center. Their existence is considered shocking in some way as in ‘why would someone give up being a man to become a woman,’ so this is deemed ‘newsworthy.’ Trans women are really only portrayed two-dimensionally in the media, most of the time existing only as subjects of hate crimes and their existence seeming irrelevant and confusing. This is displayed in news titles such as: “Man Dressed as Woman Found Dead.” Trans women are displayed only as archetypes in our media rather than just as people. They are portrayed as an evil villain, a weak victim of a crime, mentally unstable, or a manipulative character.
