My goal as an instructor for writing courses are to have students learn to communicate effectively. In a composition course, learning the tools to communicate competently sets the student up for success. The two main concepts which need to be covered in any basic writing course are communication and research.
According to current research articles students struggle with language use and “code switching” in their communication. Kathleen Turner wrote “Flipping the switch: Code-switching from text speak to standard English” to describe the phenomenon. The digital texting age is creating students who last the knowledge to know the difference between speaking with their friends and writing or speaking in a professional or academic setting. Turner (2009) identifies that text speak as a technological language students use and when they use it in an academic setting it becomes a problem (p. 60). By giving students feedback on professional writing and teaching them to find reliable sources it gives them the proper writing skills to communicate any point in both academic and professional settings. The writing of a research paper can be broken down into steps for feedback at each section thereby helping a student to produce a good final product but also understand the process and explore what works for them. In crafting a rough draft of a paper the class should be conducted in a workshop method where students are organized into smaller groups to write, edit and give feedback during the process. The instructor should make themselves available to help but be largely hands off at this point in the process.
