I observed a toddler classroom at St. Luke’s Preschool in Anchorage, Kentucky. Tammy is the lead teacher in a toddler classroom with 5 children ages 13 to 16 months. Floor assistance check on Tammy regularly, there is always someone close by to lend a hand. The children attend 2 days a week for 3 hours each day.
The classroom is warm and inviting, carpet on the floor invites the children to walk, crawl and play without obstruction. Two windows allow for nature light, the location makes it difficult for the children to look out on their own. Table and chairs are toddler size and promoted appropriate motor skills development; the small classroom had a spacious floor area with plenty of room to roam. The toy shelf could be considered large for this age group, the teacher runs the risk of climbing toddler trying to reach a desired toy on the top shelf.

The room is brightly decorated with colorful posters on the wall featuring colors, shapes, multi cultural children and animals. The shelves are filled with toys of many textures; sizes and shapes to engaged all the children’s senses. The toys and activities placed in the room were age appropriate and many, Tammy indicated that she changes out some toys on a monthly basis to keep the children interested and promote developing skills.
Tammy spends most of her time of the floor with the children playing and reading books to them. Music plays softly in the background, you can catch her singing to the children as she plays with them. Their schedule includes routine diaper changes, snack time and a cleanup time to help introduce them to routine introduce them to transitions.
