Essay On To Kill A Mockingbird Injustice

Improved Essays
While there are many instances of justice and injustice in To Kill a Mockingbird, the cases of injustice Scout witnesses and experiences are the most prominent. Examples of injustice are when Scout is told she is not allowed to be taught to read, when Uncle Jack berates Scout, and when Tom Robinson was accused of rape.
The first time Scout experiences injustice is when she is informed by the teacher that she is not allowed to have her father teach her how to read anymore. Miss Caroline strictly believes that she is the teacher and that the students are to learn from her. When Scout explains to her that Atticus had already taught her, Miss Caroline argues that Atticus “does not know how to teach” and that “reading should begin with a fresh mind…

During the trial when Mr. Ewell was on the witness chair, Atticus revealed that Mr. Ewell was left-handed, evidence that he had been the one to harm Mayella. Both Sheriff Heck Tate and Bob Ewell had agreed that the right side of her face had been banged up, showing that it would have been more likely for someone left-handed to injure the eldest Ewell child. When Mayella was on the witness chair, she stuttered when Atticus asked if her attacker hit her; “No, I don’t recollect if he hit me. I mean yes I do, he hit me.” After, Mr. Finch asked Mayella to identify the man who raped her, and she stated it was Robinson; “His left arm was fully twelve inches shorter than his right, and hung dead at his side. It ended in a small shriveled hand… and I could see it was no use to him.” Earlier, it was mentioned that Mayella had bruises on her right side. If Mr. Robinson had hit her, it would have been easier to hit her left side with his right hand. The only way Tom would have hit Mayella’s right side with his right hand is if he hit across her face, which would be rather hard considering he had no use of his left arm. Atticus had revealed that it would have proven difficult for Tom Robinson to choke Mayella, then hit her, and rape her. Despite all the evidence that he was innocent, the jury convicted Tom Robinson

To Kill A Mockingbird written by Harper Lee is written to address the horrendous issues of the 1930’s, The Great Depression, the Jim Crow Laws, and segregation. It explores a variety of themes, all of which affect the reader greatly. Its portrayal of white supremacy, injustice, and prejudice is evident in many occurrences during the novel. The way the characters react to these times of hardship, however, defines their real strength stated by Martin Luther King Jr with the quote “the ultimate measure is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy”. These significant themes, white supremacy, injustice, and prejudice, are reflected through the characters Scout Finch, Atticus…

Tom Robinson, an African-American man, who was represented as a “Mockingbird” in Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird, was wrongly accused of raping a white woman. After he went on a trail filled with unfair juries and lost the case, he was sentenced to jail, but was then brutally murdered by some guards. Based on this storyline, the main theme is social injustice, the moral unfairness in a society of colored citizens and other minorities, which is mentioned the greatest and gradually developed throughout the book.…

Him telling this to the court shows that he is incapable of physically harming Mayella Ewell. Another example is when Scout, Jem and Dill are present at the case listening to the testimony of Tom Robinson . Scout realizes the reasoning for Mayella to have went below her skin color to feel a type of connection with someone ,the explanation is shown by Scout thinking “As Tom Robinson gave his testimony, it came to me that Mayella Ewell must have been the loneliest person in the world”(page 250).…

Another example of actions that displayed prejudice and discrimination against African Americans was after the Plessy v. Ferguson case.
