“The greatest act of courage is to own all that you are (Unknown)”. A large part of To Kill A Mockingbird is the characters owning all that they are, and staying true to themselves. These acts are displayed throughout the novel in striking ways. Atticus is a big influence on his children, who grow up with an open mind as they flourish into the newest chapter in their lives. To be an encouraging character, you must stick with your morals and let people know about them. Much like Mrs. Dubose who faced her addiction, or how Atticus put his reputation in jeopardy for a man he barely knew, or how Boo risked his life for children he did not know personally. The children get into trouble with Mr. Ewell, which no-one is apparently informed of except Boo, who uses his courage to step out of his home and save the children. Mr. Ewell, shown as a rugged, scarey man does not phase Boo as he puts that fact aside to save the kids. “‘Mr. Ewell was trying to squeeze me to death, I reckon… then somebody yanked Mr. Ewell down. Jem must have got up. Somebody was staggerin’ around and coughing’. I thought it was Jem, but it was him’ I half pointed to the man in the corner”(Lee 89). Boo was courageous by showing no fear, he knew to stay true to himself to fight for the helpless kids. The hardest individual to face is yourself and once you dominate, you have established the act of courage. The characters of To Kill a Mockingbird reveal how to stay true to themselves, which were proven through challenging scenarios. They showed that you can get through any situation if you are bold and reveal your courage. The next time you are worried about a situation, stay genuine to yourself and though these scenarios are from a book, just know that having courage can help you through any
