The effectiveness of a message delivered through public speaking depends greatly on the first impression the audience receives from the presenter himself. To accept a presenter’s argument requires for a certain type of trust to be established between the presenter and the audience. When given the opportunity by Durham University give a series of three-day lectures in 1943, CS Lewis first established to the audience his authority on the various subjects found through his discussion, such as moral value and human nature. But Lewis understood that his expertise alone would not be enough to convince the Durham audience to trust him and his message, so the beginning of his lectures also centered around sentiments which were relevant for the audience.…
Shakespeare’s King Lear and Milton’s Paradise Lost are similar, but very different. They have many of the same elements within each story, though the stories are very different. King Lear and Paradise Lost bring deception and betrayal to the table with Adam and Eve eating forbidden fruit and King Lear going through hell just to be treated poorly by who he thought were his best daughters. The first story to be recognized is King Lear. King Lear is king of Britain and he is getting older.…
Right and wrong decisions are sometimes two of the hardest things an individual has to make in their life. With choices to consider, it is difficult to always know which one to choose from so a favorable consequence is obtained. Many individuals know that no matter what decisions we choose, good and bad results will come from those actions. The two stories that have been chosen as examples are The Adventures of Tom Sawyer ,and Abuela Invents the Zero .In these stories, both Constancia and Tom are young people who have to rethink decisions they have made because of the consequences that developed from poor choices.…
Similarities and Differences between Charlotte Temple and Franklin’s Autobiography Charlotte Temple by Susan Rowson and The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin have similar purposes by both having moral lessons. Rowson writes a true, disguised as fictional, story of the misfortune of a naive young girl to warn other naive young girls about such misfortunes that should, and can absolutely, be avoided. Franklin’s purpose is to record his experiences in the New World and hope that others will learn from his mistakes as well as expects them to follow him in becoming morally perfect by working on their weakness. Although both pieces of literature have confident and encouraging tones to follow their advises, Rowson is more melodramatic and uses…
In each of these books, the authors all specifically describe the wrongs the characters and subjects face in their respective, troubling circumstances. But even though the authors emphasize the hardships through anecdotes, they also describe solutions to the issues they present in their texts. Overall, they are describing the need to create and enforce morals for one’s own ideas. Many of the different anecdotes included in the texts notes the lack of morals or the lack of reinforcement that many of the characters display. In the case of Perry and Dick, the two both lacked any morals in whether it was right to kill the innocent Clutters, yet selfishly decided to kill them anyway, even after a search for money that was non-existent.…
Imagine you are faced with two choices, where one is the right choice you know you have to make, but there is a tiny part of you that just wants to make the other choice to see what plays out. Which one would you choose? The more reasonable decision that would surely guide you down the right path, or the erratic decision that you are taking a risk on? In Updike’s “A&P”, Herbert’s “The Nothing”, and Chopin’s “A Pair of Silk Stockings”, the three central characters, Sammy, Jean, and Mrs. Sommers, have to make difficult decisions that ultimately affect the ending of the short stories.…
Values and Traditions Ernest J. Gaines, the author of A Lesson Before Dying, is able to develop the theme of the book through diction to show tone. Through tone, he is able to reveal how tradition hinders the progress of a society that retains incorrect values, which promotes a system of injustice among the people in the society. To demonstrate the theme of A Lesson Before Dying, diction is used to develop a frustrated and uneasy tone. At the beginning of the book, a black man called Wiggins had been waiting for hours to talk to white men about the fate of Jefferson. Yet, Wiggins was intentionally left in the waiting room for a long period of time and is let in only to consider what persona he should use.…
The moral code under which an individual operates defines them in many ways. Moral codes typically dictate what one believes to be right and wrong, which then has a heavy influence upon ones choices in life. It is very important that people in positions of power and authority, have a clear moral code – such is the case with Miss. Lonelyhearts and Raylan. In the novella, Miss Lonelyhearts written by Nathanael West, Miss Lonelyhearts is an advice columnist. He responses to the troubling letters he receives are carelessness and insincerity, rather then treating his correspondents with compassion.…

With his unique style of writing, Eric R. Severson made Scandalous Obligations significantly refreshing to read despite the harsh and heavy topics. He uses current events, personal anecdotes and in-depth amount of scripture to shared his personal journey of responsibility. I expect that many will disagree with this book as well as Severson format because it is not for everyone. I experienced first hand the confusion and concern about the Christian responsibility, something I guess I have always wrestled with. However, it is a book that truly testes our faith and our patience in the idea of responsibility therefore it is well worth the confusion and discomfort.…
The words, love and choice are known for their positive, warm and pure meaning but Shakespeare proved it wrong. The story, Romeo and Juliet written by Shakespeare is both a loving and a heartbreaking drama. In this tragedy two star-crossed lovers named Romeo and Juliet try to be together despite their opposing family status which suggests otherwise. Examples of wrong choices made by this young and innocent couple will be discussed. You can interpret this tragedy in many ways, but undoubtedly Romeo and Juliet is suggesting that love blinds young people, and it leads them to making poor choices.…
Can a literary work be so far removed from our modern culture that it has nothing to offer it? Is our culture too advanced to learn a lesson from another generation? Value and meaning in literature are undoubtedly subjective. If we cannot learn a lesson or be reminded of some idea we had previously be told, literature seems to become irrelevant. But does the story “Good Country People” by Flannery O’Connor really fit into what we would consider irrelevant?…
As a beginning reader young adult books captivated me with what, at the time, were intriguing and comprehensible plot lines. Thus began my love affair with books. Eventually, those plot lines became my adversary, when their simplicity triggered a soporific rendition of the book. It persisted until the gifts of classical literature unwrapped as I learned to penetrate, explore, and discover meanings in, for example, Dickens’ lengthy description of a clock tower did I truly find my beloved. Although young adult books had their place in my life by inspiring a love for reading, classical literature has opened up a whole new perspective, teaching me to seek out knowledge while still yielding enjoyment as I consume each book.…
