We all know that they died tragically at the end of the story, but there is a lot more behind it than just that. The driving force that drove those thoughts into action sprouted from the feud between their two families. To illustrate, The Capulets and the Montagues have had a hatred towards each other since the beginning of the play. In fact, the opening scene was a fight scene between servants from the two families. This hatred not only caused the deaths of many characters from the play, but it also caused the tragic death of Romeo and Juliet. It all began when Tybalt saw Romeo courting Juliet at the Capulet Party. Their family rivalry caused Tybalt to kill Mercutio for Romeo’s actions. And Romeo avenged Mercutio by killing Tybalt. As a result, Romeo got banished for it. At the end, this chain of deaths ended with Juliet’s death. At the end of the play, Prince Escalus lectures the families on what their feud has done to each other. He says “Capulet! Montague! See what a scourge is laid upon your hate, That heaven finds means to kill your joys with love!” (V:iii:292).
