“The sniper” by Liam O’Flaherty is a fictional story set during the early weeks of the Irish civil war, during the battle of Dublin. SUMMARY: An IRA sniper is sitting on a roof eating a sandwich and drinking a shot of whiskey. Evan though it’s dangerous, he lights a cigarette and is almost immediately shot at by an enemy sniper. An armoured car of the free staters arrives, and an old lady walks up to it and points out the position of the IRA sniper. The sniper shoots the old lady and the man in the car, he is then shot. He tricks the enemy sniper into shooting his cap, which he placed over the rifle. He lets the cap fall into the street and drops his rifle, tricking the enemy sniper into thinking he is dead; the enemy sniper then stands up …show more content…
In the beginning of the story, the sniper is described as very good at his job. He "is used to looking at death." His movements are those of a well-trained sniper. He decides to light a cigarette, and does so “hurriedly”. This is his training taking over. Evan though it is dangerous to do it, he does it cautiously. When the old woman points him out he quickly and accurately kills both the man in the car and the old woman. When shot in the arm he remains calm and controlled, still calculating every move, and comes up with a plan to reveal his enemy. The sniper then reveals a soft side when he is “bitten by remorse” after killing the enemy sniper.
Figurative language: there was a large amount of figurative language in The Sniper, for example “the sniper could hear the dull panting of the motor” “a bullet flattened itself against the parapet” “he became bitten by remorse” and “his bullets would never pierce the steel that covered the grey monster” “rifles broke the silence of night, spasmodically, like dogs barking on a lone farm” “he was slowly falling forward, as if in a dream” and “his right arm was paining him like a thousand

Comparison and Contrast Essay The stories “Cranes” and “The Sniper” show us the effects of war. The themes of “Cranes” and “The Sniper” are similar due to the war tearing people apart, however, they are different because in “Cranes” the compassion prevails, while in “The Sniper” survival wins over compassion. Both stories themes show us how war reduces human life to nothing and how it tears apart families and friends but that family and friends come first. We see this in “Cranes” when Songsam lets Tokchae escape into the woods.…

Both the sniper and the big brother in both stories, learn a lesson, to me carefully. Not to think of the first option and go with it. You have to think of other ways, in any solution. Both were thinking of themselves. The big brother thought if he had a brother who could walk, he wouldn’t be as embarrassed, then he kept on making goals one after the other, not giving his little brother enough time to catch up with him.…

O’Flaherty as well as using character development to bring about his theme, uses description heavily. He describes the republican sniper in a way to make sure that the reader can clearly understand his theme. Because his theme is that war can drive some men to madness, O’Flaherty makes the character out to be somewhat crazy. The story shows this in paragraph 20 when O’Flaherty writes, “The Republican sniper smiled and lifted his revolver above the edge of the parapet”(3). The description in this quote, perfectly arranged to hint at O’Flaherty’s theme.…

By definition, a sniper is a marksman who maintains close visual contact with an enemy, and shoots from concealed positions or distances. Snipers must excel at long-range shooting, infiltration, camouflage, surveillance, and target acquisitions. Snipers must also posses vast quantities of patience, be able to stay frozen for extraordinarily long periods of time, and outlast their opponents in severe weather. Although women were usually not allowed to become snipers during this time period, Lyudmila Pavlichenko was the greatest European Sniper, because of her resilience against any obstacle in her way, her unconventional methods of sniping, and her legacy. At a young age, Pavlichenko always considered herself a tomboy, and hated the thought…

War tends to take a toll on citizens who both participate in the fight and remain home. “The Sniper” is a story set in times of the Irish Civil War, depicting a Free Starter sniper who undergoes a huge change in the face of killing an enemy sniper. He is dehumanized from pain and killing others, seeing people only as targets. He is also desensitized to aspects of the war most civilians would be very afraid of, which is shown through the pain of when he gets shot in the arm--the narration only depicts it as a “deadened sensation”. However, once he finally succeeds in killing the enemy sniper, “the lust of battle of battle died in him”--meaning that he’s no longer desensitized from war. The story also states that “He became bitten by remorse”, meaning that he no longer sees the enemy sniper as a target, but rather a person; this also signifies the end of his dehumanized war state.…
