With a sad song playing in the background, viewers watch as a seemingly sad and distraught man sits in his vehicle with a pistol and a bottle of bourbon. Anticipation slowly consuming the viewer as they await to see what will happen next. Is the guy going to kill himself? The guy drunkenly exits his vehicle with bullets dropping from his lap and hitting the ground. He stands in front of a well-lit house. He stumbles towards the house, and the scene ends. The next scene shows the same man on trial for murder. The man, named Andy Dufresne, was charged with the murders of his wife and her lover. Andy’s wife was found shot to death in their bed while in the arms of her lover who was also shot to death. Andy was convicted of the murders, murders he didn’t commit, and sentenced to two life terms consecutively. Andy’s luck was surely bad as he not only had to deal with his wife’s infidelity, her untimely murder and being falsely convicted for her murder. Andy obviously felt alone in the world, but that would soon change. In prison, Andy would meet a fellow prisoner and they would develop a beautiful kinship. He tells the story of Andy’s life after he arrives to the prison. Red was in prison for cutting the brakes on his wife’s car and killing her, his neighbor and the neighbor’s young child. Red wanted to collect the life insurance on his wife. He didn’t plan on killing the neighbor or child. Red had been in prison for 20 years when Andy arrived. Red was the prison’s smuggler. He could get anything into the prison and was a “regular Sears Roebuck”. Red is a black man and the only “guilty man in Shawshank”. Red was remorseful for the crimes he committed and lived up to what he had done. Although Red murdered people, Andy still treated him kindly and formed a friendship with
