The California Wellness Plan 2014 is a roadmap in CA goals, priorities, focus areas, evidenced based strategies to improve population health outcomes, bend the medical care cost curve and achieve health equality in California. It is a 120 page document that outlines goals for California and provides partners to work towards shared goals as in disease prevention. The California Department of Health is another great source for collaboration for the public health nurse. As a career choice, hopefully the benefits outweigh the disadvantages. Public health nurses work in an extremely wide-range of positions, mainly out of the hospital environment. Public health nurses often have the opportunity to travel during their work day locally and to significant distances. This allows for much more autonomy which has been shown to increase job satisfaction. The military has a need for public nurses in their community and may be added job security. Bilingual nurses, particularly those fluent in both Spanish and English, are desparetly needed and the median annual salary is $64,690. There are better paying nursing jobs, but most public health nurses find their reward in the work rather than the pay. The average salary has also been estimated at $51,000 annually. Budget cuts and scarce resources also can make the work environment favorable. The necessity to travel may also be a detriment. There is now an expectation in most states that entry in public health nurse practice is a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. Public health nurses also need to understand their own limits so they don’t become burnt
