The old man’s name is Santiago, he has no children and no family, and he is a lonely man and he fish for a living. The only person that give his life a meaning is the boy, Manolin. Their relationship is like a father and son. Santiago taught the boy how to fish and they used to go fishing together. They loved each other so much although they have not admitted it. They always lifted up each other’s spirits. “You are already a man” (Hemingway 27). Santiago wanted knew the boy since he was five, so he told him that he is already a man because he used to fish with him and now he got him a beer, which only men do that. It’s like a father telling his son that he’s not a little boy anymore, it’s a touching line because he is not even his father. And as we all think and see that our father is our greatest hero and he’s this strong man that is always strong and never weak, Manolin also se Santiago as this powerful and independent man that faced a lot and seen a lot and he’s still standing on his foot with such great confidence and hope. “There are many good fisherman and some great ones. But there is only you” (33). He made him even happier when he told him he’s the best, because we all need someone to tell us that we are good enough to achieve what we want and to push our spirits a little bit high. Its human nature to feel confident when someone compliments us. So that’s what the boy did it the old man, which is another sign of true father son relation. Santiago always missed Manolin when he was alone at the sea. Just like a father misses his son because every father wants his son beside him to teach him, and to man him up. Father’s love to see their sons as real men. “I wish I had the boy. To help me and to see this” (43). He repeats this line a lot because he truly misses his company. A man his age needs a company so he won’t feel desspread as all other old people
