Basie wants Jamie to lay all of the snares for catching pheasants, so he makes a deal with Jamie. If Jamie can lay all of the snares in the marsh area that is just outside of the fence of the camp they are in, Jamie can move into the American dorm with Basie and Basie will take Jamie along when the time comes to escape the camp. When I heard Basie’s deal, I thought that it was pretty fair and that it was easy if all he had to do was lay the snares without getting caught, but when I thought about what Basie and the other people in the American dorm were talking about a little earlier on in the film, I realized that again, Basie was using Jamie. It seems like Basie was trying to kill Jamie now because he didn’t actually see pheasants and want Jamie to lay the snares for Thanksgiving, he wanted to know if there were any mines in the marsh so he could plan his escape route. Jamie risked his life for Basie and in reality all Basie wants is to test the marsh for mines. Basie has betrayed Jamie without Jamie even
