Mental Effects Of Abortion Essay

In 2012, according to the Center for Disease Control (CDC) 699,202 abortions were performed in the United States. The psychological effects of abortions have been widely studied since 1987 when anti-choice president Ronald Reagan directed the then Surgeon General, Everret Koop, to study and report on the mental effects of induced abortion. The report claimed that there was not enough evidence to conclude the psychologic effects on women of induced abortion (Koop,1987). This report is contrary to hundreds of other reports that concluded that the negative mental side effects of abortions were miniscule. Since Koop’s report in 1987, dozens of additional studies have been done and overwhelmingly shown that the risk for mental health problems in …show more content…
Of course it can’t be argued that women never experience undesirable mental effects after abortions but there are usually outside factors that are influencing the women not just an abortion on its own. Factors that can affect the mental health of an individual after an abortion can include religious affiliation, family pressure, history of mental health problems, and the circumstances under which the abortion was obtained (“Emotional Side Effects After an Abortion.”) Most studies have found that these negative feelings of regret or guilt are usually because of one of the previous factors not the abortion itself (Adler, 1989)(Major, 2008). Another factor worth mentioning is that in studies in which the result leads to the conclusion that abortions do cause undue mental strain and trauma researchers have found these studies to be deeply flawed in many aspects. One such study was lead by Vignetta Charles, Abortion and long-term mental health outcomes: a systematic review of the evidence, was published in a 2008 issue of the journal Contraception. Making abortions illegal ensures that a child has a fair chance to a life they could lead. Not only do pro-life advocates have concern for the life of an unborn child, but they also have concern for women’s mental and physical health risks after having abortions. Women who have abortions are at risk for various mental health disorders such as PTSD, anxiety, anger and resentment, guilt, depression, substance abuse, and suicide. Dr. Coleman notes that, “…the literature on the psychological effects of abortion conducted over the last several decades indicates that a minimum of 10-20% of women experience adverse, prolonged, post-abortion reactions. This translates into at least 130,000 to 260,000 new cases of serious mental health problems each year in the U.S” (Report of The South Dakota Task Force to Study Abortion).…

In my opinion, if the social policy was suddenly altered, there would be more costs than benefits. For example, if the abortion laws changed, causing abortions to become illegal it would seriously endanger women’s health. Not all abortions are due to unplanned pregnancies. Some are due to medical complications that could take the life of the mother or the child (source 2). Altering the abortion laws will not stop abortions, it will leave women to seek help in an unsafe way.…

Surprisingly, mental health problems have not been proven to be caused from an elective abortion. Most women felt “relief” from their elective abortion, not because they killed their baby, but because life stress they believe would be more harmful for themselves and the baby (Women on web, n.d.). Unintended pregnancies, when carried through pregnancy and born, are related to antepartum and postpartum depression (Biggs, Neuhaus, & Foster, 2015). The research so far as not concluded that abortions affect women 's mental health (Steinberg and Rubin, 2014). Biggs et al.…

While some women might note a sense of relief, others may develop complications such as regret, depression, anger, shame and even suicidal thoughts and feelings. Depending on the mother’s stance on abortion can limit or greatly intensify her emotional state following the procedure. The effects can also be increased in women who might have been coerced or even forced into having the abortion performed. This often involves threats of physical harm or blackmail and accounts for 64% of all abortions and putting teens at higher risk of coerced abortion. “In 1995, a pregnant employee at Duluth (Minn.)…

The American Psychological Association has revisited the case in 2006 and they claimed that the risk of mental health problems is no greater than a woman delivering her own baby. Not only did the APA concluded this, but also the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges claim that the rates of mental health problems are the same as a woman giving birth (Guttmacher Institute). In the article, it says that women who have an abortion are required to get counseling and therapy so no…

While many studies have attempted to gather prior mental health history, it remains to be seen if women disclose their mental health history in its’ entirety prior to choosing to have an abortion. (Rocca et al., 2015; Major et al., 2009) In many of the studies, women dropped out of the studies or did not follow-up post-abortion. Follow-ups were also most often conducted over the phone by someone who was not associated with the research. (Biggs et al., 2016)…

One health risk is psychological damage to mothers who had abortions. Chittom and Newton (2016) reported that “sadness, depression, guilt, anxiety, numbness, and shame are just a few of the psychological effects common to women who had abortions.” According to “Should Abortion be Legal” (2016), a study done by BMC Magazine reported that women who had abortions often have higher anxiety levels and are 154% more likely to commit suicide than other women. The Journal of Social and Clinical Psychology reported a study on the effects on men whose partners had abortions and it found that 51.6% had regrets, 45.2% felt sadness, and 25.8% experienced depression (“Should Abortion be Legal,” 2016). Chittom and Newton (2016) note that Pro-Life activists often explain the long term emotional, spiritual, psychological, and physical trauma after the procedure as post-abortion syndrome, which is not officially recognized by the medical world.…

Abortion causes many different problems. A woman who goes to a clinic and has her baby aborted is at risk for psychological trouble. Post-traumatic stress disorder sometimes develops when a terrifying event happens. Though a woman that has an abortion is probably pro-choice, that does not change the fact that abortions are very frightening. Even though the 1973 decision in Roe v. Wade legalized abortion, the federal government still restricts a lot of funding for it.…
