Susan Cain’s Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can’t Stop Talking, argues that introverts are underrated and undervalued in today’s society. The definition of an introvert is a diffident, reticent person who is chiefly concerned with their own thoughts and feelings rather than with external things, whereas an extrovert is defined as an unreserved, overtly eloquent person. This novel argues that the ‘Extrovert Ideal,’ or the common belief that the perfect person is gregarious, outgoing, and overtly expressive, has been falsely categorized as the new social norm, and that introverts are extremely beneficial to today’s culture. Cain discusses the importance of looking at introverts and extroverts as equals, rather than considering sociable people ‘better’ than reserved people. She portrays the societal views of introverts as being weak, unoriginal, and unintelligent, which more often than not, is not at all true. In fact, studies such as SAT scores, grade-point averages, and intelligence test scores prove this perception to be inaccurate.
