I believe that we are all products of our environment, we are all given a choice to choose our path in life and live when we want to live or be who you want to be, but with that, we must accept the consequences that life has to offer. This was true for Wes; he felt that he couldn’t fit in with his friends from Riverdale because he didn’t have enough money and was one of the only African American students in that school and he was considered to be “rich” by his neighborhood friends from the Bronx. Wes was so concerned with his appearance at school. “Every week I sat down to create a schedule for my clothes. I had three good shirts and three good pairs of pants. I would rotate their orders, mixing and matching so that each day I had a fresh combination” (Spiegel & Grau; pg 52. 2011). The moms worked hard to maintain a family while the boys got in trouble now and then with the police and at school. When it looked like they were both going down the wrong path, Wes turned it around graduated from military school, became a Rhodes Scholar, White House Fellow and business leader. Most people would have given up on him and thought he was a lost cause, but he proved everyone wrong. He showed me to never give up on yourself, and that hard work pays off, in the end, considering where he started from, just an African American boy caught up on street corners with his friends skipping school. Never sell yourself short, you can accomplish great things with a little hard work and the right mindset. And that’s exactly what Wes did, while he thought he never get into Hopkins because his SAT score wasn’t good enough he applied anyways. “So after filling out the application, I put it out of my mind.
