Essay On The Most Dangerous Game

In the story, The Most Dangerous Game, there are three characters that have a passion for hunting, yet the three hunters share similar and different viewpoints on the sport. In the beginning of the story, two of the hunters, Whitney and Rainsford are discussing their personal views of hunting. Whitney feels that when you are hunting an animal, that the animals have feelings for being hunted. He thinks that every being has the fear of pain and death. He says this on page 26 “Even so, I rather think that they understand one thing, fear. The fear of pain and death”(Connell 26). When Whitney says this to Rainsford, he is showing that he cares about the animals he is hunting and recognizes that these animals have feelings. On the other hand Rainsford believes the exact opposite. He says this on page 26 “The world is made up of two classes, the hunters and the huntees”(Connell 26). Rainsford says to Whitney that there are some animals that are meant to be hunted and some animals are meant to hunt. Rainsford’s view of hunting is that hunting animals is a good sport but when you are really good at hunting one animal you move to a harder animal. He doesn’t think that humans are animals since humans don’t have to live in the wild and since humans are able to adapt to their environment. Zaroff’s point of view is that when someone gets tired of one animal and have hunted the hardest animals to hunt and you have won in the chase, that you are supposed to hunt at the top of the food chain, humans,. Zaroff technically has the same point of view but in a way where Rainsford wants a challenge but wants to stay at the “top” of the food chain.
