The Mongol’s were the first to allow freedom of religion and education. All religious leaders were exempt from public service as well as taxation. This policy helped ensure easier governance of the territories they conquered. The Mongol empire stretched from the Pacific Ocean to the Mediterranean Sea, and the governing of such a large area would not have been possible without freedom of religion.
