Theseus was said to have volunteered himself to be a tribute to the Minotaur, only to carry out his plan to slay the deadly beast. Upon entering the labyrinth with his fellow Athenians, Theseus was given a ball of string. Those that ventured into the labyrinth never found their way out, not only because they would get lost but because they would also be devoured by the Minotaur before getting a chance.
