“Are you going to make a career of it?”, is an all familiar question. If you would have asked me 7 years ago after an Iraq deployment your question would have been met with some exaggerated eye rolls. Fast forward almost 7 years later and I’ve reenlisted with plans to stay in to meet 20 years. What changed was that I was offered a reclassification to 42A, Human Resources(HR) Specialist. It changed my mindset and how I do daily business on the military as well as the civilian side. The HR Sergeant takes care of Soldiers and their Families, so that when that deployed Soldier is down range, the last thing they have to worry about is if they are receiving the correct pay this month or if their records are updated for the next promotion board. …show more content…
Professions are disciplined, produce expert work, and adhere to an ethical standard. Soldiers are a profession too; consider it a Profession of Arms. “An American Professional Soldier is an expert, a volunteer certified in the Profession of Arms, bonded with comrades in a shared identity and culture of sacrifice and service to the nation and the Constitution, who adheres to the highest ethical standards and is a steward of the future of the Army profession.” The key attributes of our Profession of Arms are expertise, trust, development, values and service. Leader’s moral-ethical values, instilled by the seven Army values, must be part of their daily actions or they are doing a disservice to their Soldiers. A leader reinforces honorable behavior through their leadership. Leaders who are knowledgeable earn trust and maintain that trust by focusing on continuous development so that they are experts, adaptable, and resilient.
