In Everyday Use, which takes place in Georgia, Alice Walker intends to convey the meaning of heritage to the reader. Dee, Mama’s daughter, perceives a history of oppression within her family and thus within her culture, causing her to reject her real culture. Dee does not fully understand her African culture, so she does things that she believes further connects her to her heritage, but these things are hollow and incorrect.
