When Hamlet enters, he questions if it is better to be alive or dead. Ophelia is misled by Hamlet because of the events he has done for her in the past and expects Hamlet to be in love with her. Hamlet goes to explain otherwise. “You should not have believed me, for virtue cannot/ so inoculate our old stock but we shall relish of it. I/ loved you not” (Shakespeare III. I. 126-128). According to Hamlet, everyone is rotten in the kingdom, and no matter how hard they try, they will not ever live a virtuous life. Hamlet claims he does not love Ophelia.
