The Importance of Women in Beowulf Almost all of the stories we have studied this semester have been dominated by males. The protagonists, heroes, and villains are all males who carry major roles, yet they do not carry the most important ones. In the poem Beowulf, we see this heavily played out. The prevalence of women in Beowulf is limited, however, their importance is great, perhaps even more so than men. Grendel, the loathsome man-beast feared by all, was thirsty for blood. Grendel’s mother was the only one who cared for this unlovable monster. This is one reason Grendel’s mother appeared in this poem instead of his father. She lived by example, only leaving the safety of the forest to avenge the death of a kinsman (Kiernan). If Grendel followed the lead of his mother, he may had avoided the conflict between him and

Through marriage, she united the Danes and the Frisians. However, in contrast, Hildenburh shows more of a masculine side when compared to Wealtheow. It is made obvious that Hildenburh has been through many trials. (Beowulf 1070-1185). She was living among a bloody battle, her brother was killed in battle, and her son was murdered as well. This caused for a flame of revenge in her heart. The common thread of revenge is seen in her eagerness to fight back for what she was wronged of. Because of this, Grendel’s mother, Beowulf, and now Hildenburh show similarity. Queen Hildenburh is an example of the power that women could hold during this time. Her voice is stern as she gives orders for her loved ones bodies to be burned on the same bier. People listened to her and followed her commands. By her being stern and aggressive the reader sees the portrayal of power that women hold. Hindenburh is also a great example of the multiple sides that women can possess. Women can be assertive, but they can also bring about

What means necessary would one take for their own family, to honor and to defend their loved one’s self and memory? In the poem Beowulf by Seamus Heaney, Grendel's mother was put in a situation where her only son, Grendel was grotesquely killed by the protagonist Beowulf, who is a strong, humble warrior who protected the Danes and Geats. Not only was he killed but they took his dead body and displayed it for all to see as a representation of their victory. As soon as the mother comprehended what had occurred she went to Denmark not out of pleasure but to try to get vengeance for her son and killed Aeschere, an advisor of the Danes and stole her son’s arm that was on display.…

Grendel, as a de facto “star” of the poem, must be written as the superior being inasmuch as all heroes are portrayed as being one of the biggest and the baddest of any work of literature. Grendel’s mother, as other characters, must be portrayed as being less-than any hero; it simply is this way or else heroes would not be heroes, or even anti-heroes. As still occurs in many modern tales, the women in Beowulf are depicted as being mentally more astute and peaceable than men, but their physicality is inferior to those of the male characters, much as it is with real-life physiology. As Puhvel writes “(W)hereas Grendel had terrorized and slaughtered the assembled Danish… and carried off thirty at a time, the ogress contents herself with seizing one and beats a hasty retreat when she is discovered. Thus the notion of female physical inferiority is here unmistakably woven into the fabric of the poem” (15).…

For example, when the narrator was explaining how the lord of the Shieldings was leaving he says, “left the mead-hall to lie with Wealhtheow, his queen and bedmate” (lines 666-667). His queen was looked at as something to do in bed as opposed to the elegance a queen should have. Beowulf’s society looked at women as more of an object than another individual. In the Anglo-Saxon time period, women were okay with being treated as property to the men in the society. With this being said, women are associated with giving the image that they are weak and obedient.…

Immediately one can tell that Beowulf is a very male-centric and domineering text. The entirety of the whole epic only follows the the male lead, and the only pivotal, plot important characters are also male. In contrast, the only female character takes action in anything is the female villain, Grendel’s mother. Beowulf portrays only the male characters as the heroes, the people who make change within the world, while powerful females are presented as demonic hags that destroy everything in their paths. The fact Beowulf only focuses only on the male characters for any substantial character and plot progression censors females by erasing any hope of positive representation for the gender.…

The story of Beowulf is one of the most important poems in Anglo-Saxon literature (James). The author of the Old English epic poem is a mystery, like most poems and books of the Anglo-Saxon period (“BEOWULF BACKGROUND”). The poem is said to have been composed around 700 A.D., though no one is certain of that (“What You Need”). After it was composed, it evolved through many retellings before it was actually written down. No one knows the exact time that the poem was written, but most archaeologists and scholars believe that it was around the 17th and 18th century (“10 Interesting Beowulf Facts”).…
