The Gospel of Luke and Jesus in Our Lives Today The Gospel of Luke shows significant relevance to all aspects of our daily Christian lives whilst successfully reinforcing the teachings and actions of Jesus Christ. Through Luke’s Gospel, we can encounter Jesus firsthand and understand his teachings in depth in order to extensively implement them to live a God-fearing life and inspire others to do the same. Jesus is the bringer of salvation, good news and the Kingdom of God. He was the first to speak the Gospel and the living word himself. The Gospel of Luke focuses on the fact that the Kingdom of God has already come and all are welcome inside until this day. It features the Prayer of the Poor (Mary sings about God’s salvation for all sinners) which shows that Jesus as the son of God would accomplish these things on God’s behalf, raising up the lowly and humbling others to build the Reign of God, the perfect example for global citizens today. The angels’ announcement of Christ’s birth was first made to the shepherds, implying that people with little significance, wealth or power hold a special place in heaven. In addition, God honours Lazarus in Heaven whereas the rich man suffers in Hades. All these teachings are relevant today due to huge gaps between wealth distribution in individuals, developing and developed nations. This is evident when both Joseph and Mary display true faith and obedience to the angel Gabriel’s warnings. Luke emphasises God’s love for ones willing to accept his call and do perform will, something hard to accomplished in our current self-centred society. The Holy Family is a role model for families to practice love and faith in God when resolving conflicts and growing stronger together spiritually. Luke’s Gospel also recounts stories of Jesus’ childhood, youths reading the good news will sense Jesus’ growing wisdom, his knowledge (evident when preaching to the teachers at the temple of Jerusalem) and how he upholds Gospel values as a child. Young Jesus inspires youths to encounter and establish their faith from an early age, practice obedience, challenge themselves in religious settings (by speaking up and exploring religious questions). Luke references important figures like John the Baptist, the perfect model for Christians prophetic missionary, how they should point others towards Jesus with passion and humility. Similarly, another prominent figure in our community today who upholds the Gospel values is Pope Francis. He brings the wondrous gift of hope to the sick, homeless, suffering, outlaws and other struggling individuals across the globe.
