The Goldbergs, a television sitcom show shown on the ABC network, focuses on a family living in a town in Pennsylvania in the 1980s. The producer, Adam Goldberg, uses events that happened to his family in the 1980s to create each episode. Adam, what most people would call a nerd and a little quirky, follows all the new pop culture arising during the 1908s. Because of his love of pop culture, he documents his life by using his VHS camcorder and recording several aspects of his life. Adam lives with his grandpa (Pop), Mom (Beverly), Dad (Murray), Sister (Erica), and Brother (Barry). He dreams of directing movies, which he practices by recording many fights and other memorable aspects of his and his family’s lives. Adam is also the child that doesn’t want to grow up, in other words all of his friends have grown to find interest in more mature topics and he has not. Adam still finds interest in robots, Star Wars, and action figures. Being the youngest, Adam is usually ignored by the rest of the family. Barry’s demeanor resembles his dad’s, for example he is short-tempered, but is a compassionate on the inside. Barry’s snap judgement leads him to believe that he is always short-ended and that his family is always ganging up on him. One of his talents is being a freestyle rapper named Big Tasty. Lastly, is the eldest sister Erica. She is the most “normal” one out of the family. Like most teenage girls of the 1908s, she is rebellious and trendy, but unexpectedly the most intelligent child in the family. Before her junior year she was also a nerd, but fortunately she grew out of that phase of her life and became cool and popular. Erica flashes back to her geeky freshman year, when she took honors classes and was involved in scholastic clubs, during several episodes. Of course we can’t forget Adam’s grandfather Pops, who is Beverly’s dad. A rich old man that is widowed, Pops also lives with the Goldberg family. Although many of the episodes may seem too wacky to be true, in reality they are under exaggerated and very much true. According to an interview done by Hollywood vs. History, the real Adam Goldberg describes how the TV show relates to real childhood. Murray did walk around in his underwear as soon as he got home, Beverly is very much a smother, and their lives were filled with many family fights and disagreements. To some extent, The Goldbergs is toned down from their real lives. Adam states, “In my family, all we did was yell ...if I really showed what my mom was like, no one would watch the show. ...
