They continued on the journey, and as the moon faded into a lightening sky, the animals began to come out, and the forest grew alive with sound and movement. The first rays of sunlight stretched out from the rising sun, shining through the thin gaps between the trees and illuminating the forest with a dim light. Now, as the day started to dawn and the night faded away, the full grandeur of the Sequoya trees lightened into visibility, revealing the fine needle leaves soaked in a beautiful deep green, the thin branches gracefully outstretched like a dancing ballerina’s arms, and the huge majestic trunk with bits of moss crawling up in odd patterns. They scampered about as quietly as they could, still tense with fear of awakening the monsters. But the forest that was once drenched in silence would now and then hear the chirp of a bird or the call of an animal. The two children traversed a great part of the forest without much conversation, for each was buried deep in their own thoughts. Maria wondered if all that was happening was real, or if it was just a daydream that would all vanish into nothingness as soon as she woke up. But she had a feeling that even if this were a dream, it would be a long tie before she woke up. As for Jack, his thoughts were obscured and hidden deep down inside of those oddly colored eyes, veiled by layers of skilled disguise. As the sun started to peek out from behind the horizon, the animals once again absconded into their shelters. “They will be coming out again soon,” Jack said. “We must walk softly, so we do not catch their …show more content…
Maria started back, her heart stopping for a second. “What was that?” she asked, her voice trembling. Jack gently grabbed her hand and pushed her forward. “Let’s keep moving,” he said, “There are monsters nearby.” The air seemed to thicken around Maria as she continued, keeping close to Jack and always grasping tightly onto his hand. The picture of the monsters was still fresh in her brain, carved in and forever in her memories: ugly crooked teeth, nasty scars, swollen lips, smashed in nose. It was something she would never forget. And although she did not realize it just then, there was an uncanny resemblance between Jack’s green and blue eyes and the monster’s red and grey eyes. They hurried forward, jumping over thick roots and circling around trees. Suddenly, Maria stopped. “Wait,” she said, “That didn’t sound like the monsters’ cry.” “It wasn’t,” Jack answered, “They’ve caught their prey.” “But that was a human’s cry,” Maria said, her heart pounding. “You said there weren’t any humans in this land.” “Not until you and your friends came.” Maria gasped. “What’s going to happen to
