Multiple research studies exist regarding the issue of how the ideal body portrayed by The Fashion Industry affects women and their body image. The purpose of this paper is to address the negative effects that these slender-figure standards have on women. The following will analyze some of the factors that contribute to negative body image and low self-esteem, from how the “ideal body” has changed through the years from being possible to attain in the past until reaching the point where it is unattainable without having to use unhealthy behaviors. By analyzing and interpreting these factors the intention is to answer the question about “What are the negative effects that “size” in the Fashion Industry has on women?”

The glorification that exists towards this ideal in our society has caused millions of women to suffer from eating disorders like anorexia or bulimia, and problems like depression in the attempt to reach those standards. Over the past 100 years, and even throughout history the idea of being able to attain the perfect body has being created and pushed by society. In their book Good Girls Don’t Eat Dessert the authors Rosalyn Meadow and Lillie Weiss state that “Although standards of what constitutes an attractive body have varied over the years, at no other time has an anorexic like slimness being held up as the model of physical beauty”. Throughout the years these beauty standards have been evolving in different ways; According to Liberty of Congress in ‘”The Gibson Girl as ‘The New Woman’” (n.d.) during the 1900’s, the S- shaped body was every woman’s ideal. This was because the curvy Gibson girls whom were known for being more present in society and more visible for their body features portrayed it.
