The United States began there work in nuclear research when two men Leo Szilard and Eugene Wigner wrote a letter which was signed by Einstein to President Roosevelt called the Einstein-Szilard which detailed the concern that they had over “Extremely powerful weapons of a bombs of a new type. (Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manhattan_Project))” The letter also urged the United States to obtain stockpiles of Uranium Ore and continue Enrico Fermi and nuclear chain reactions. Roosevelt agreed with this sentiment and executed order 8807 which formed the Office of Scientific Research and Development which empowered large engineering projects for what is now going to be known as the Manhattan project.
