It does not matter what has happened previously, what matters will come next. In "The Devil's Arithmetic", Hannah Stern has to find something called an Afikoman. Instead, she lets Aaron, her little brother, go look for it. Earlier in the book, she was mean, rude, and grumpy. Now, she is nice and lets Aaron find the Afikoman. Hannah even knew where it was hidden, but decided not to tell her brother where it was. She let him have the fun of getting it. However, this is not the last time Hannah is a good person. The fact that Chaya helped this girl proves that she is a really good person. Chaya choosing to help the small child tells us that she cares about other people's lives over her own. Chaya is being very nice and kind when she helps the girl, and being nice during a time when everybody around you is going to die, takes a lot of courage. Hannah, or Chaya, in this case, is not the only person who is good at heart. Anne Frank, for example, makes everybody happier during a dangerous
