The flag sparks pain and pokes at deep wounds that are still fresh. The flag brings up memories of the dark past of American history it includes racism, colonialism and white supremacy which all had a big influence on slavery. Even though slavery has always been a part of our human history, the type of slavery that went on for 300 years that Africans were enslaved was a new form that consisted of inhumane treatments, that crimpled the continent of Africa. This view of the flag isn’t completely wrong, they still see and understand the history of the flag but see the flag as apart of who they are today. In the article of “Virginia principal refuses to take down her schools confederate flags”, is about Hurley High school who has the confederate flag embedded into their school, from being on lockers, doors, mascots and tattooed on students. The confederate flag is an “in escapable presence” and is “a source of pride in their tiny coalmining community”. The one thing that was confusing about the article is when they used the one black kid in the community and the school as proof that the symbol isn’t racist. If the symbol wasn’t racist there would not be a need to use a black person to justify what the symbol actually represented. This article “Virginia principal refuses to take down her schools confederate flags” proves how inconsiderate some people are, yes it might be okay that everyone in the town supports the confederate flag but as a high school that has sports teams, musical bands and so forth promotes them to travel around to different areas.
