“You always have a green light that burns all night at the end of your dock”(Fitzgerald 98). This famous quote is one of many ways that F. Scott Fitzgerald used colors in his popular novel The Great Gatsby. Color symbolism is a branch of the Archetypal lense that uses colors to describe different people and their personalities throughout literature. Colors, including green, yellow, white, and red are used to symbolise hope, caution, innocence, and anger through what people see, the cars they drive, what they wear, and how they live in the Great Gatsby. The color green is very important to the novel, representing hope, the future, and new life. The first and most common use of green in this story is the green light at the end of Daisy’s …show more content…
Typically when people think of the color white they think of purity and innocence, like weddings and snow. In The Great Gatsby white is attached to characters like Daisy and Jordan who are not pure or innocent in their lives, their work, or their love, but that's how they are shown on the outside. “They were both in white and their dresses were rippling and fluttering as if they had just been blown back in after a short flight around the house.” (12). Later the girls are shown in white again, “Daisy and jordan lay upon an enormous couch, like silver idols, weighing down their own white dresses against the singing breeze of the fans.” (122). In both of these quotes the girls are shown to be very delicate, they are not shown in a way that mirrors their personality. Nick is very clear about Jordan’s dishonesty and blatantly says that “She was incurably dishonest. She wasn’t able to endure being at a disadvantage…”(63). Nick knows that Jordan is a cheater and a liar but he still chooses to spend time with her, this could be due to her pure appearance. While Jorden is lying and cheating in her life, Daisy cheats in her love by being with Gatsby. Tom, Daisy’s husband, says “I suppose the latest thing is to sit back and let Mr. Nobody from Nowhere make love to your wife.” (137).Later, after this Tom lets Daisy drive home with Gatsby, “Go on, He won’t annoy you. I think he realizes that his presumptuous little …show more content…
Scott Fitzgerald used many different colors both literally and symbolically to describe characters in a deeper more symbolic way. A variety of colors including but not limited to green, yellow and white were sprinkled throughout this novel and they added a depth to the text that would have been missed without them. By using different colors Fitzgerald was able to show how different each of the characters were by giving them a clear visual representation. Adding colors in this way made the book a more interesting story to read and could be one of the major reasons why The Great Gatsby has stood the test of

The Green Light symbolizes Gatsby’s hopes & dreams for the future & Gatsby also associates it with Daisy. The Green Light is mostly Gatsby reaching towards the darkness and finding a light to lead him to his goal. Gatsby believed in the Green Light because it inspired him not to give up & never to let Daisy down. Gatsby loved Daisy to the point he’ll go to the end of the world for her. He went upon his way to find ways to bring her around such as parties, & getting Nick to get them back together. Nick goes out his way to make Daisy come to Gatsby but it always has been a complete fail. I think Daisy still loves Gatsby deep down inside her heart but it to scared to show or admit the fact that the love is still there between the two. Daisy’s…

The color white is typically associated with purity and light. White is typically predominant in circumstances regarding elegance and symbolizes cleanliness. In “The Great Gatsby”, the color white is utilized to allude to the same ideas but in an ironic fashion. For example, Daisy and Jordan are said to be wearing white multiple times in the novel. When they are first introduced, Nick tells the reader that, “They are both in white and their dresses were rippling and fluttering as if they had just been blown back in after a short flight around the house” (6). The imagery that the reader gets from this statement is that both women are people of stature, elegance, and purity. The irony is that Daisy does not fit those ideals. Daisy is never a…

“Not only does green symbolize new money and greed, but it is also prominent as the green light at the end of the Buchannan dock” (Brozak). The most obvious and also the most important use of color symbolism is the green light at the end of the Buchannan’s dock. Gatsby reaches out for the light in hopes that he can have a life with Daisy and that he too can become a part of the old money. “I glanced seaward and distinguished nothing except a single green light” (Fitzgerald 22). The green light that Gatsby strives for eludes him in the novel as Gatsby is unable to steal Daisy from Tom and he is unable to separate himself from the rest of the new money people and become old money and his life ends tragically after trying to protect Daisy. Nick describes Gatsby as the most hopeful person he had ever met, Gatsby sees the green light as his hope that he can be with his love. Gatsby himself talks of the light “You always have a green light at the end of your dock” (Fitzgerald 90). Gatsby desires to be with daisy and all of his hopes and desires are represented by the light at the end of the Buchannan’s dock that Gatsby looks at longingly each and every night. As Nick Carraway summed up at the end of the novel “Gatsby believed in the green light, the orgastic future at the end of Daisy’s dock” (Fitzgerald 171). The green light signifies Gatsby’s never failing hope for the…

However, as the book continues and the readers are become closer to Daisy’s personality, the readers see that the color white is really used to symbolize Daisy’s shallow and selfish nature. For instance, when Nick, Tom, Jordan, Gatsby, and Daisy- who was wearing a white dress- were together, Daisy was not able to plan what to do with her day. Instead, she cried out, “what’ll we do with ourselves this afternoon, and the day after that, and the next thirty years?” (118). In the quote, Daisy represents how hollow and superficial she and her life is, considering how she is not even capable of planning out one day of her life. Because of how she is encased by the color white, it is deduced that the color white is…

Green stands for hope, and at times jealousy (Huber). The most prominent association with the color green is that of Gatsby`s hope for having Daisy. When Nick looks out at Gatsby`s backyard view, he “glanced seaward and distinguished nothing except a single green light” (Fitzgerald 25). The green light is at the end of Daisy’s dock. Gatsby had purposely bought his house to have a view across the bay of Daisy`s house, therefore making the light a symbol of how much he wants Daisy. Later in the story, the body of water that had the green light is referred to as “the green sound” (Fitzgerald 112). The whole sound grew to be green, symbolizing how Daisy is Gatsby`s whole world and his biggest desire. The light also “Symbolizes Gatsby`s deep love to Daisy and his American dream” (Haibing). Gatsby is a great example of the American dream. Gatsby went from being a poor farmer to a rich man on Long island. The green light also symbolizes the American dream of becoming a respected old money man, which would be accomplished by marrying into Daisy`s family. Therefore, Daisy is the key to love and the American dream. Also, when Tom Buchanan stops for gas, we see how green represents jealousy. Tom pulls into George Wilson`s gas station in a fancy car, and clearly with George only owning a gas station, he is most likely jealous. When Tom tells George to fill the tank, George’s face is described as “In the sunlight his face was green” (Fitzgerald 117). The green face represents how George is jealous of Tom because of Tom`s money. Green mostly represents Gatsby`s hope, but can also stand for…

Color symbolism is a major element of the narrative, and Fitzgerald subtly fuses it into nearly every scene to create a well-painted world with deeper meaning into what is really occurring between characters. First, the color yellow is practically another character in this novel because of how often it is mentioned. The use of the color yellow in The Great Gatsby serves to convey the idea of wealth, opulence, and power. This is evident by when and where Fitzgerald chooses to incorporate the color. In Chapter Three, when readers are introduced to Gatsby’s wild parties, yellow is the color most often described. Gatsby’s car is yellow, the orchestra plays “yellow cocktail music” (44), two girls wear “twin yellow dresses” (47), and…

Scott Fitzgerald’s greatest masterpiece and one of the finest American novels in the 20th century because it was able the capture the mood and characteristics of the Roaring Twenties. One of the ways Fitzgerald was able to capture this time period so successfully was because of his use of color as symbolism, which helped to portray common characteristics of people in this time period.
