Martin Luther King Jr. once stated that, “every man must decide whether he will walk in the light of creative altruism or in the darkness of destructive selfishness.” In the play Macbeth, written by William Shakespeare, the tragic hero, Macbeth, chooses to live his life through destructive selfishness disregarding his good character. He chooses to please only himself. Macbeth is basically “good”; he freely chooses to commit acts of evil. Throughout the play, Macbeth ignores his good conscious, listening instead to his evil one, he lets evil consume himself and acts on those feelings, and he realizes evil has destroyed his life leaving him lonely and depressed. When Macbeth reflects on his life, he realizes that by shutting out good, he has been abandoned by his friends and by his happiness. All of Macbeth’s friends have fled to fight against him to regain Scotland or are dead due to actions that Macbeth chose to make. Macbeth has no army and no one to turn to for help. He has let his life become so abhorrent that he is surrounded by over 10,000 Scottish and English soldiers who are aching to see Macbeth dead. Macbeth realizes this and states, “(Life’s) a tale/ told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, / signifying nothing” (5.5.28-30). Macbeth feels that he has lived a meaningless life due to the bad choices he made. Choosing to live without morals and good has caused his life to become futile. Macbeth’s abuse of power as king has lead to his death. Because Macbeth chose to live a life of evil, he brought neglect to the city of Scotland and sorrow to its people. To combat the loss of Macbeth’s honorable qualities, Macduff and Malcolm seek revenge against him. They defeat the “king”. Malcolm and Macduff are discussing a battle against Macbeth when Malcolm states:

He ignores his good side and concentrates on his evil side, evil consumes Macbeth and he chooses to act upon it and Macbeth realizes evil has caused his life to be destroyed and meaningless. Macbeth chooses to act upon the evil feeling inside of him instead of listening to what his good conscious was telling him resulting in him being abandoned by his friends and family, losing his happiness and sanity and being defeated and killed. Humans are complex beings that contain both good and evil. Every single person, no matter the circumstances or pre-notions, contains at least a small amount of both good and evil. By controlling desires, people are able to overcome the darkness of selfish destruction and walk in the light of creative
