WWII has fallen on the world and Liesel and her foster family happen to be on Germany’s side. The story starts with Liesel and her mother and brother on a train. The destination is Molching but before they reach, her brother dies in his sleep and her mother is taken away. When the men are taking Liesel’s mother away, one of them drop a book, The Gravedigger’s Handbook. She steals her first book then. Hans was insulted by his only son calling him a coward but even after Hans Jr. left his family, Hans didn’t lose hope with his beliefs. He kept on fighting for Jews against his neighbors calling him a Jew-lover which inspired Liesel and the readers of The Book Thief. I learned that in times of darkness and despair, there is always hope. There will always be something that you want to live for. Hans found comfort in his accordion when he was whipped for helping Jews and Liesel found hope in books when her family was taken away from her. By the end of the book, I learned that although sometimes it seems as if there is no point in life, there is always something that will bring you joy, hope, and makes you want to stand
