In the book “Slam” the main character is Greg “Slam” Harris hence the name of the book “Slam”. Slam has to go through many obstacles throughout book with starting at a new school, his academics, his personal/ love life and also his daily home life. On the bright side he doesn’t let all those things mess with the one thing that he really loves which is basketball. An example of this is “Basketball is my thing. I can hoop. Case closed… You can take my game to the bank and wait around for the interest. With me it’s not like playing a game, it’s like the only time I’m being for real.”(Myers 1). He believe that this is his element and it keeps him busy and out trouble unlike every other teenager around where he lives. As I have said before Slam has a true passion for basketball. Slam has his chance at a better future but Ice on the other hand is a drug dealer. They have been “brothers” since they were babies but as time went on they have become distant. What also contributes to their life paths is how they grew up and what type of family life they have. Ice has had a hard childhood. In the text its states “Ice lived on 141st Street, which used to be one of the best blocks in the hood. Then the corner of the building he lived in fell off….His family moved in with an aunt that lived across the street… Ice’s father got stabbed to death.” (Myers 179). Ice also all of a sudden has a ton load of money and new clothes and items, which raises concern with Slam and Mtisha about him being a drug dealer and it turns around later in the book these accusations were true. Slam on the other hand has a future in front of him. Slam has an opportunity to get a college scholarship if he keeps his grades up. “If somebody wanted to offer me a scholarship I could take it.” (Myers 201).
