The first school district in the United States to require all students to wear uniforms was Long Beach, California, in 1994 (“School Uniforms”). Having students wear school uniforms serves a purpose as to letting the students focus more on school work as opposed to how they look around their peers. Still today, many school districts are considering the uniform policy causing the opposition to think differently. Because school uniforms have been proven with strong evidence to be beneficial to schools, families, and students, it is important that school districts adopt a school uniform policy. Representative Janet Adkins got information from officials from five Florida school districts to support her testimony. She discovered that “school uniforms help create a positive learning environment because they remove distractions” (Gillin). This shows that since there is a positive learning environment, it supports the decision to adopt the uniform policy because the students will not be distracted while doing their school work. Advocates of school uniforms in public schools said, “[they] are a way to reduce gang violence and crime in schools” (Chandler). This shows that by having the students wear uniforms, everyone in school would be wearing the same thing which could reduce the amount of students wanting to pick on other students because of what they wear to school. Researchers and educators from Washington DC found a wider array of evidence, such as, “improved school culture, academic performance, and attendance rates” (Chandler).
