During the Renaissance period there were major advances in anatomy, physics, engineering and geography just to mention a few. Artists during this time would study anatomy so that they could have a better understanding of the body. This would enable them to create better paintings and sculptures. Some artists like Leonardo Da Vinci observed physicians in order to get a better understanding of the structure of the body. This would help them improve on fine tuning their human art. Filippo Brunelleschi was an architect who further studied math and made advances in it so as to design better buildings. For example there was the invention of the microscope by Anton Van Leewenhoek which enabled the discovery of blood cells and sperm. There was also the invention of the telescope by Galileo Galilei which led to the confirmation of the Copernicus’ heliocentric theory. A famous piece of art that was made during the baroque era would be the Matyrdom of Saint Lawrence by Gian Lorenzo Bernini. The Matyrdom of Saint Lawrence depicts the saint being burned alive on a gridiron. A single block of Carrara marble was used to make the sculpture. The structure showed anatomical precision and an infallible sense for the organic coherence and structure of the human body. The sculpture showed naturalism and was emotionally intense and was also three dimensional.
