We have all seen the commercials, a driver takes their eyes off the road to read a text message, three seconds, maybe four; and suddenly the driver’s life is changed by a horrific accident. These advertisements are hard to watch, no driver wants to think about being responsible for a traffic accident that takes his or her own life or the lives of other motorists or pedestrians. Nevertheless, most drivers still use their cell phones while operating their vehicle. While taking a phone call is dangerous enough, the advent of text messaging made cell phones even more incompatible with driving a car. Reading or sending a text or email takes both eyes off of the road, the driver’s mind off the task of driving, and sometimes both hands off the wheel. …show more content…
In 2011, 1.3 million automobile accidents were caused by texting and driving. Texting and driving makes you twenty-three percent more likely to be involved in an accident. In 2012, 3,328 people were killed in distraction-related crashes. I have lost a friend due to a car accident caused by this issue, it was the worst phone call I have ever received. My friend was just 20 years old, on her way back home from the University she was attending. On her way back to town, she was on her phone texting her friends to make plans for her weekend visit. She was actively on her cellphone as she was on the highway going 60 mph, did not notice the traffic jam ahead, and crashed into a car in front of her. She was rushed to the hospital and was announced dead two hours after the accident. It was heartbreaking for her family and friends, and what happened could happen to anyone that is using their phone while operating a vehicle. To avoid going through what I did, there needs to be a change. It happens too often. With a law that states guidelines and allowed behaviors for drivers, the fatality rate will decrease. This can be proven true by looking at statistics from states that have already made the
