Local Government of Texas
The local government of Texas is similar to many other local and county governments throughout the United States. The local governments are used by the State government to allow citizens participation in different appointed and elected sizes through counties, cities, districts and a numerous commissions and boards.
County governments are considered as the highest level of the local government of Texas. The county government appears to be limited to state authorities that ensure that the constitution of the United States is followed accordingly. The county governments are run by a group of four commissioners elected from single-member districts as well as one county judge. Texas has the largest number of counties when …show more content…
These are the city manager, the strong mayor-based council, and the weak mayor-based council. They deal with elections for cumulative voting systems, as well as law enforcement procedures and other issues.
Texas does not have township. Instead, it has incorporated and unincorporated cities. These cities can be ‘home-rule’ or ‘general-rule,’ and the local government has authority on road maintenance and law enforcement (McCleskey, 99). The elections in municipal government are non-partisan. The main responsibilities of the municipal government is to create rules and regulations under the ‘code of ordinances.'
Special districts are under the city and county governments, and their elections are non-partisan or on an appointment basis (Patterson, et. al., 102). The most common special district is the independent school district, which is led by a board of trustees and work independently of any other governing authority. The school districts can cover more than one county because they are not aligned according to county and city boundaries. The special districts governments are on the lowest level of the local government. These include river authorities, groundwater conservation districts, hospital districts, and water supply districts.
