Due to its versatility and economic value, tenter hooks are one of the most interesting objects from the past. The hooks are believed to originate from England and first composed of in the 17th century. Ever since then, Archaeologists have found over 270 tenterhooks in James Fort. Tenter hooks, composed of iron or wooden tenders, and spanning from one to two inches long, were used to dry clothes after they have been washed and pounded. Wool, for example, was hung on wooden tenters after been removed of oils and had its fibers thickened. Since gambling was popular during England’s Elizabeth and Stuart period, the dice were popularly used by men to gamble between amongst each other. The games usually caused many violent outbursts after someone lost money and/or goods to another. Due to the rising violence, the Jamestown soldier is discouraged the games. In addition, Captain John Smith, who lead the eventual success of Jamestown, created “The Laws Divine, Morall and Martiall” in 1610 and 1612 to control gambling and games. The laws stated that anyone who was found with dice or cards would get whipped or even be sent to jail for a year.
