Essay On Ten Things I Hate About You

The similarities between “Ten Things I Hate About You” and The Taming of a Shrew are quite profound. It was not difficult to see which character represented which, and you could definitely see the plot of the play as it played out through the much modernized movie. However, there were many differences that must be pointed out. Let us begin with the most obvious difference… the time. While it was very interesting to see the play, set in the middle ages of Italy, transferred to a modern U.S. city, many plot points had to be removed simply because they did not fit with the times. This is a big difference but in the end it really does not take away from the movie at all. One major difference you see is the movie focuses just as much on the women as on the men. Katarina was actually one of the most similar from play to movie. Her mannerisms and actions are very similar as in the beginning she insults any attempts of Patrick to woo her and over time grows to love him. Patrick is very different from his play counterpart. In the play Petruchio was just a normal and rather nice guy at the beginning of the play. Patrick on the other hand was known for being a mean delinquent who was constantly in trouble. As the play goes on we see Petruchio go absolutely crazy causing quite a stir at his own wedding. On the other hand, Patrick is polar opposite as he seems to get kinder as the movie progresses. Also in the play, Petruchio was not paid to woo Katarina, but actually did it of his own free will for no particular reason other than that he was determined to woo Katarina. Bianca in the movie is seen as a slightly stuck up sophomore in highschool who is used to getting her way and loves going out and partying. The play was actually pretty vague when it came to Bianca, as she was really only seen as the pretty girl that was the most desirable. So she was fairly open to

No Gold Diggers Here When adapting The Taming of the Shrew into a movie to appeal to a modern audience, the director of Ten Things I Hate About You chose to emphasize the American ideals of love and respect instead of the commonly held Elizabethan belief that unions were akin to mutually benefitting business arrangements. Such an adaptation of the plot is demonstrated by the relationship between Patrick Verona and Kat Stratford—characters who respectively mirror Shakespeare’s Petruchio and Katherine. In both Shakespeare’s play and the modern adaptation, the Petruchio character agrees to ‘tame’ the Katherine character under the pretenses of monetary gain. In The Taming of the Shrew, Petruchio is promised “twenty thousand crowns” upon his marriage…

Between films and books, it is often seen how different the films tend to be in comparison with the real book story. In the play Macbeth, written by Shakespeare, and the 2015 movie of Macbeth, directed by Justin Kurzel, there are major differences seen. Although the film and the play share many similarities, the changes in the plot that occur during the movie change the flow and results of the situations occurring within the play. In the movie, Justin Kurzel takes away the psychological power Lady Macbeth has over different events, gives a different view of Macbeth and Lady Macbeth, and the plot twist caused by Malcolm’s actions. Macbeth the film and Macbeth the play, show how a movie can differ from the actual message and mood the original author is in reality giving.…

Similarly, the Bella in the play displays the some of the same moments of resilience and thought. The difference being, that Ruehl puts together a far more dynamic performance that allows one not only to empathize with Bella more, but allows for a deeper understanding of her personality and shows the tremendous growth of the character. Bella comes off as a more thoughtful and dynamic character with very complex emotion. Beside the portrayal, the additional scenes and alternate ending also give far more insight into the kind of person she is. She could hardly contain her excitement as she approached Johnny, ready to tell him that she got the money they need to start their lives together.…

Kat acts as the protagonist in both stories. Kat is the protagonist because she doesn’t want to marry anyone or date anyone but eventually she does and realizes she likes being in some form of a relationship. Petruchio is the antagonist in The Taming Of The Shrew because he forces Kat into a marriage she doesn’t want to be in and tries, and succeeds at “taming” her and changing her. Patrick is the antagonist in 10 Things I Hate About You because he dates Kat and helps her change and become a more social and likable person. The female character’s names are the exact same, and have the exact same personality. The film, as well as the play expresses the idea of individulity, trust and relationships. They both express feminine independence by using the tradition dating standards and the choice to embrace them like Bianca or completley reject them like Kat. The only difference is that in The Taming of the Shrew it is not dating, it is mariagge that is being pressured. For my critique assignment, I decided to focus on the late 90’s film, “10 Things I Hate About You” by Gil Junger that was based off of Shakespeare’s “Taming of the Shrew”. The very first time that I saw this film, I do not even think that it was intentional. I was just casually in my room with the TV on a random channel, and not even paying attention to whatever show or movie was playing. Then I actually started to focus on the film because at the time, I was a huge Batman fan and I saw that Heath Ledger (The Joker) was in the film.…

The comedic play The Taming of the Shrew and the tragedy King Lear show a number of similarities, including the subject of appearance versus reality. The daughters of King Lear, Regan and Goneril, fake their image similarly to Bianca, the daughter of Baptista. These three characters’ true colors are revealed throughout the plays, illustrating how deceptive they were to the people around them, but in the end the affects of the characters attitudes essentially has different results. Goneril and Regan’s true characters are obviously revealed early on in the play as they fabricate their feelings towards their father and act heinous to him as well as the other characters, but Bianca’s real personality comes as a surprise even though it shouldn’t…

Revenge, death, and marriage are ideas that are completely different from each other, but are all some major themes that can appear in many stories or plays. They can be used as one theme, or be tied together with another to create an intriguing story.
